Be a Fund Raiser
Non-profit organizations raise money for causes that vary from rescuing animals to providing shelter for homeless people. However, all these organizations are similar because their goal is something other than earning a profit, and they are supported primarily (if not entirely) by the monies brought in by fundraisers.
Instructions
1. Set a goal and time-line for how much money you hope to raise.
2. Identify donors appropriate for your organization. Connection, concern, capacity -- in that order -- are the three main factors to look for in a donor. Potential donors are often inundated with worthy causes, and as a fundraiser it is your job to identify donors who might be interested in giving to you.
3. Research the donors before approaching them for money. You should have a basic understanding of their assets, giving history and interests.
4. Foundations will often give more than individuals. Look through the Foundation Centers database to identify foundations that are interested in funding causes similar to yours.
5. Events, auctions and parlor meetings are effective methods for raising money for non-profit organizations. Remember that the goal is to make money, not just increase awareness of the cause.
6. Utilize the Internet in your fund-raising efforts: Ask for donations on your Web site, and allow people to donate online. Send e-newsletters, and, if appropriate, use social networking sites and post videos online.
7. Follow-up can be the most critical aspect of fund raising, and should always be implemented. It can be as simple as a thank you letter or as involved as weekly/monthly calls.
