You can adopt a new furry friend through your local SPCA.
The acronym SPCA proudly stands for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Founded in 1886 by Henry Bergh, the American SPCA was the first organization dedicated to promoting humane treatment of animals. As of the time of publication of this article, over 5,000 community-based SPCA organizations continue providing a safe haven for abused and unwanted animals. Each local organization offers adoption services for dogs, cats, and in some cases, horses, guinea pigs and rabbits. Adoption procedures, animal availability, and requirements for adoptive homes differ between each SPCA organization.
Instructions
1. Go to the main ASPCA home page and click on the orange "Adoption" heading located at the top of the screen.
2. Click the "Find a Shelter" heading located in an orange bar on the left side of the "Adoption" screen.
3. Enter your city or zip code in the designated box and select the radius you want to search. The minimum search radius is 10 miles, but increasing the distance will show more SPCA shelters.
4. Scroll down the "Results List" and click on the closest SPCA to you. The results list will also show other animal rescue organizations in your area that are not affiliated with the SPCA. Select shelters with SPCA in the title if you wish to adopt exclusively through this organization.
