Get Rid Of The Rats In A House Without Harming Your Dog

Young rats can fit through openings as small as 1/2 inch.

A rat infestation in your home can pose serious problems for both you and your dog. Rats are destructive and can spread various diseases. Getting rid of the rats without harming your dog requires the use of nonchemical means. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove access to all sources of food for the rats. Store all food in airtight containers, including bags of pet food and bird seed. Garbage should be kept in secure containers and disposed of as soon as possible.

2. Eliminate the rats' access your home. Seal all holes and cracks in your home's exterior and interior. This will prevent more rats from coming into your home and allow you to trap and remove the existing population.

3. Determine what type of pet-safe rat trap you want to use in your home. Live rat traps use bait for a lure. When the rat enters the enclosure, the door is triggered and traps them inside. A basic snap trap can be placed inside a metal or plastic enclosure to kill rats safely without endangering other pets. A rat enters the enclosure through a door hole and is killed when the trap snaps shut as it takes the bait. Runway traps are another form of snap trap but they do not use bait. They have an elongated trigger that will snap and kill the rat as it runs over the trap. When a rat walks across a glue board, it is caught and held by the adhesive.

4. Place the traps in areas where the rats are most likely to come across them; rats tend to establish a route along runways and walls. Select areas where you have seen the rats or where you have noticed droppings.
