Facts On The Minnesota Norway Spruce Tree

Norway spruce is a favorite landscaping tree in Minnesota.


Norway spruce (Picea abies) is a common tree in Minnesota. It is fast-growing and relatively disease resistant compared to other species of spruce and has a wide range of uses in the state. Does this Spark an idea?


Description


Norway spruce grows to a height of 40 to 80 feet with a spread of 25 to 30 feet. It has a pyramidal crown. Needles on a Norway spruce are approximately 1/2 inch to 1 inch long, four-sided and pointed at the end.


Uses


While Norway spruce is not native to Minnesota, it is a common landscaping tree and one of the fastest growing of all species of spruce in the state. Other uses include windbreaks, shelterbelts, pulpwood and sawlogs. It is a popular choice for Christmas tree farms.


Diseases


Norway spruce shows resistance to diseases that commonly effect other species of spruce in Minnesota, such as rhizosphaera needle cast and spruce needle rust. It is mildly susceptible to some diseases, including fungal infections caused by the fungii Stigmina lautii and Setomelanomma holmii, both which effect the needles of spruce. It can become infected by tomentosus root rot in some areas of the state.
