When people go on a family vacation, they may want their entire family, including their pet cat, to go with them. The problem is that transporting a pet cat isn’t always a simple process and it gets even more complicated when traveling by plane.

1. If you are going to be taking your cat on a airplane, the first thing you need to do is find out what types of restrictions and regulations are mandated by the country or state that you are entering. Most countries and states have a specific list of vaccinations and health assessments that they require before you can bring a pet across their border. You need to start getting your cat’s health papers in order no later then three months before your departure date.
2. Next call the airline that you will be flying and ask about what type of carrier they require your cat to be transported in. Most airlines will not transfer a pet unless they are securely confined in a plastic container that has holes on all four sides. The container should be lockable. If your cat is going to be a part of your carry on luggage, the cat carrier must be small enough that it can be stored underneath the seat. Ask the airline if you need any additional paperwork or veterinarian certificates in order to take your cat on the plane.
3. The day before your flight only give your cat half of its normal dinner. Your cat will be more comfortable flying on an empty stomach. Not feeding your cat as much also means that you won’t have to worry about trying to fit a litter box into its crate.
4. On the day of your flight you need to make sure that you have firmly attached a piece of paper or sticker to your cat carrier. All of your contact information should be clearly printed.
5. Some cats are happier if you cover their crate with a lightweight blanket or sheet. This makes them feel more secure.
