An animal shelter is a great place to find a dog.
According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, there are around 5,000 animal shelters across the nation, housing some five to seven million animals each year. Of the dogs that enter shelters, 60 percent have to be euthanized because they are not adopted and because of the number of new animals that are brought in daily. There simply is not enough room to keep them all. Animal shelters and sanctuaries are ideal places to look for a dog that might otherwise be euthanized. Follow the guidelines below to help you in your search.
Instructions
1. Check with your local municipality to locate animal shelters in your area. Municipal shelters will generally inoculate and spay/neuter the animals prior to making them available for adoption.
2. Visit the ASPCA's website and do a search for dogs that are available for adoption in your area. You can search by breed or zip code.
3. Locate other nonprofit animal shelters and rescue groups in your area to find available dogs. Some rescue groups specialize in sheltering specific breeds, such as greyhounds or pit bull terriers. If you are looking for a specific breed, but cannot afford to purchase a dog from a breeder, you may be able to find a rescue group that has the breed you want.
4. Look on community noticeboards at local pet stores for dogs in need of a new home. Local newspapers and publications may also have pet adoption sections in their classified advertisements.
