Tiger Scout Merit Badge Requirements

Participating in family life is one of the requirements of being a Tiger Cub Scout.

Tiger Cub Scouts is an branch of the Scouting organization designed for boys who are in the first grade, or seven years of age. The organization aims to help boys to better themselves and become functioning members of their community. When a boy joins Tiger Cub Scouts, he must memorize the Tiger Cub Motto and the Tiger Cub Promise in order to earn a Tiger Cub Totem. He then completes various activities to earn beads that will hang from the totem. Once the boy earns 15 beads, he will be awarded his Tiger Cub Scout Merit Badge.

Making My Family Special

As with all the categories, a Tiger Cub Scout must complete a family-oriented requirement, a den- oriented requirement and a "Go See It" requirement to earn all of his beads. In the Making My Family Special category, the Tiger Cub must do a chore with his adult partner for the family requirement. To earn the den requirement, he must make a family scrapbook. For the "Go See It" bead, he must research how family life was in the past by visiting a library, museum or historical building or by having a conversation with an older person.

Where I Live

For the Where I Live category, the Tiger Cub earns his family bead by studying a map of his community with his adult partner. The den badge is earned by practicing the Pledge of Allegiance with the other members of his den and participating in a flag ceremony. Finally the boy can earn his "Go See It" bead by visiting a police or fire station and questioning one of the officers about the work he or she does in the community.

Keeping Myself Healthy and Safe

This category is all about personal care. The Cub Scout earns the family bead by planning and executing a fire drill in his home. The boy must get together with his adult partner and devise a plan of what to do if he should find himself lost. The requirement for the den bead is to design a food guide pyramid. For the "Go See It" requirement, the boy must choose a game or sport and learn the rules. He must then see an amateur or professional match to see those rules in action.

How I Tell It

The family requirement for this category is for the boy to guide a family mealtime discussion in which each family member tells the rest of the table about his or her day. To get his den bead, the boy must play a round of "Tell It Like It Isn't." The "Go See It" bead is earned by visiting a newspaper office or television or radio station to learn how the media communicates with the masses.

Let's Go Outdoors

In this final category, the boy can earn his family bead by simply going outside and watching the weather. To get the den badge, he must make a leaf rubbing with a crayon or colored pencil. Finally the "Go See It" badge can be earned by taking a group hike with the other members of his den.
