Look for a trustworthy charity to donate to in order to help people in need.
Many people donate money to charity with the goal of helping people in need. Charities support a wide variety of causes, including feeding the hungry, helping the sick, and supporting the abused. While some charities focus specifically on one group of people such as children or women, others have a wider scope and try to help anyone in need. Before you donate to a charity, decide which cause you want to support and do some research to find a charity that is trustworthy.
Instructions
1. Determine which sort of charity organization you'd like to find. Charities focus on a variety of causes. Narrow down your search by visiting the Charity Navigator website (See Resources) to browse charities by category based on your interests.
2. Search based on location. Many online sources can help you find a charity that will help people in need in your area. Use the IRS or GuideStar websites (See Resources) to search charities based on name and location.
3. Do your research. To find a charity that will help people in need, make sure it is a legitimate and trustworthy charity. Some organizations calling themselves charities actually scam people out of money that is not truly going towards a cause. Use a reliable source like the Better Business Bureau's "Accredited Charity Directory" to search charity complaints and reviews, and see approved lists of charities.
4. Check local listings. Search in your phone book under "Charities" to look for organizations that help people in need within your town. Call the organizations and ask for specifics.
5. Ask friends and family which charities they donate to, then research the organizations they mention.
