The Average Salary Of Social Workers In Nonprofit Organizations

Social workers can work in a variety of different settings. Some work in non-profit settings like social advocacy organizations, community food and housing centers and for organizations that give grants and other financial gifts. The average salary of social workers in non-profit organizations are comparable to the salaries earned by public social workers and those working in health care settings.


Social Advocacy Organizations


According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 5,540 social workers in social advocacy organizations nationwide in 2010. These social workers earned an average salary of $36,880 per year. The BLS classifies these social workers among the ranks of child, family and school social workers. The typical average salary for this category of social worker was $43,850, with a median salary of $40,210. The middle 50 percent of social workers in this category made between $32,270 and $52,450.


Emergency and Relief Services


The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that 3,230 social workers worked in community food and housing, emergency and relief service organizations in 2010. According to the BLS, these social workers earned an average salary of $33,550 per year. The BLS categorizes these social workers as mental health and substance abuse social workers. Social workers in this field made an average annual salary of $41,880, with a median salary of $38,600. The middle 50 percent made between $30,870 and $50,420.


Money Gifting Organizations


The Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that there were 1,470 individuals who worked in the field of grant making and giving services. These social workers earned higher salaries than their other non-profit counterparts at an average salary of $43,790 per year. The BLS classifies these social workers among the ranks of healthcare social workers who made average salaries of $49,200 per year. The middle 50 percent in this broad social work field made between $37,040 and $59,260.


Job Outlook


Although the BLS indicates that the number of jobs in social work are expected to grow by 16 percent, the bureau also notes that job growth in each of the separate social work categories will occur at different rates. Leading the growth charge, medical and public health social work jobs are projected to grow by 22 percent, while mental health and substance abuse social work jobs are expected to grow by 20 percent. Only 12 percent growth is expected in the child, family and school social work field. All other social work jobs not classified in these categories are expected to grow in number by 13 percent.
