If you are ready to adopt a puppy you can find one close to home.
It is important for a family to research all that is involved in caring for a puppy before making a decision to adopt. Adopting a puppy is a commitment to care for the puppy for its entire life. If your family is sure you want to adopt, using the Internet makes finding a puppy in your area easier.
Instructions
1. Search local shelters for a puppy either physically or through Adopt a Pet (see resources). There, you can type in your zip code as well as how far you are willing to travel to get the puppy. Add any other qualifications such as breed, color or age and click "Go Fetch a Puppy." Puppies from your local shelter will pop up. Look through the pictures and then go visit the shelter to apply for adoption.
2. Search Pet Finder (see resources) for a puppy. Pet Finder is a large site that has more than just shelter puppies listed. There are also puppies from stores such as PetsMart. On the left hand side of the site you can click on a dog from the animal drop down menu. Then list the breed of puppy you are looking for (this is optional if you are not partial to a certain breed). Add your zip code and click "Search" to get a list of puppies near you.
3. Find a specific breed of puppy near your hometown by using the Breeders USA website. On the left side of the website you can click the specific breed of puppy you are looking for. Under that, pick your state and click "Search." Scroll down to find the closest town. The breeder's information will be listed so you can contact them directly.
4. Look in your local newspaper. If a family's dog has a litter that they cannot care for, they may take an ad out in the paper. You may be responsible for medical care, such as the puppies first shots, but you would be giving a puppy a chance to have a great home.
