Keep A Pet Rat

Rats can make intelligent, affectionate pets. They are active and social so they require a devoted owner who will give them plenty of attention. Follow these steps to learn keep a pet rat.

Instructions

1. Buy a cage with ample room for your rat. If you buy a small cage, you may need a larger one if the rat grows. The cage should have different levels so your rat can exercise by climbing up and down the ramps.

2. Provide your rat with stimulating toys. Ladders and hammocks make good toys for rats. Many everyday household objects, such as glass jars or old clothes, can provide your rat with hours of enjoyment. Switch the toys in the cage frequently to keep your rat from becoming bored.

3. Fill the cage with rodent litter to absorb the urine and keep the cage smelling fresh. Avoid using cedar or pine shavings; they can cause upper respiratory problems in rats. If you look in a pet store you can find plenty of alternatives, such as litter made from wood pulp fiber.

4. Give your pet rat a nesting box for sleeping. Fill the nesting box with dye-free paper to shred so he can make his own bed.

5. Change the cage frequently so your rat stays comfortable and clean. Give him fresh litter and clean his toys, food dishes and water bottles.
