Rules For Foster Parents

Becoming a foster parent is an exciting process, but there are many state-enforced rules with which foster families must comply. Although specific rules may vary from one state's foster care program to another, the general rules governing the system are similar.

Facilities

Foster parents must be able to provide adequate bedroom space for foster children that includes room for a bed and clothes storage.

Discipline

Foster parents must comply with rules regarding discipline strategies and may not use corporal punishment on the foster children in their care.

Visitation

Foster parents must support their foster children's visitations with family members by having children ready and available for transportation.

Reunification Support

Foster parents must act in support of reunification of their foster children with biological family members. The goal of the foster care system is to rehabilitate and reunite parents with children whenever possible, and foster parents must act in accordance with this goal.

Medical Attention

Foster parents must take their foster children to the doctor for regular well visits as well as when the children are sick or injured. It is a foster parent's responsibility to see that the child receives proper medical attention and all required immunizations.
