There is no shortage of homeless cats, dogs, birds and even rats and reptiles that are in need of rescue. Every community has a need for a pet rescue, or even dozens of pet rescues, that can help support the efforts of the animal shelters. If you have a talent for helping troubled dogs, or can't pass up a homeless cat, then you may be ready to run a private pet rescue and adoption organization. Beyond having good animal skills you will also need to become part of the animal community to establish a successful pet rescue.
Instructions
1. Get funding from private donations and grants for the care of the pets that will come through your rescue. You will need to pay for food, toys and medical care for each pet. Obtain donations and funding before you take in any pets so that each one receives the care that it needs.
2. Recruit a network of volunteers for your pet rescue. You will need volunteers to act as foster homes for the pets, to help with fundraising, get 501c3 non-profit status and help with all the other details of running a pet rescue.
3. Get a veterinarian or two who will provide for the medical needs of each pet. Working with a vet whom you have an established relationship with will help reduce costs. Your vet may offer discounts and may help your pet rescue build a good reputation.
4. Make contacts within the local animal community to get pets coming to you and adopted out. Contact each animal shelter, humane society and other pet rescues in your area to ask how you can help and let them know what animals you can take in and care for.
5. Develop a website that looks professional. Websites are now an expected part of any business, even for a pet rescue. This is often a potential adopter's first look at your organization, so make sure it looks legitimate and impressive. Include information on some pets that are available for adoption, how people can donate and adoption policies to review.
