If you love dogs and enjoy working outside, a SAR (search and rescue) K-9 handler position could be the right job for you. A SAR K-9 handler is responsible for training dogs to locate missing people by detecting traces of human scent. The handler and dog work together as a team. A SAR handler's job can be challenging but rewarding.
Instructions
1. Meet the minimum requirements to become a K-9 handler. You must be at least 18 years of age. You must also be in good health because you will be required to work outside in the field for several hours at a time.
2. Own a dog that qualifies to be a SAR K-9 dog. Many search-and-rescue teams will require you to own your own dog, but some teams may provide you with a dog. The K-9 dogs are usually very large dogs, including Dobermans, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers and Labradors.
3. Locate a search-and-rescue team. You can locate a search-and-rescue team by contacting your local law-enforcement divisions, fire departments and rescue squads.
4. Submit an application, pass required screenings and submit to a background check. Your dog must also pass screening tests to make sure it is suitable to be a K-9 rescue dog. Also, your dog must have the skills and personality to be trainable and get along well with other dogs and people.
5. Complete the necessary training sessions. The initial training period is anywhere from 1 to 2 years, and the training sessions are approximately twice a week. The length of training depends upon the team's requirements and the handler's progress with his or her dog.
6. Learn train a dog to find lost people and inform you of their locations.
7. Possess important skills, such as those involving land navigation, scent theory, radio protocols, wilderness survival and first aid.
8. Pass all required tests in order to become a certified search-and-rescue team.
9. Complete the probationary period. After you become a SAR K-9 handler, you must complete a probationary period of at least 4 months. The time may vary depending upon your location.
