Use treats to convince a nervous dog to hold still while being groomed.
A dog that is properly groomed not only looks better, but feels better too. Removing matted fur and taking a heavy coat off before the summer can save a dog from fleas and overheating. Going through a summer with a thick coat can be torturous for a dog. Breeds like the German Shepherd and the Newfoundland are heavy shedders. Shaving their heavy coats can lighten their load and make them a little more active when the weather heats up.
Instructions
1. Clear the table of clutter. Spread trash bags around the table to catch falling fur. As a rule of thumb, place the No. 10 blade on the clippers first. If this is inadequate for the amount of fur on the dog, change the blade size.
2. Place the dog collar and leash on the dog, making sure that the collar is neither too loose nor too tight. Two fingers should fit under the collar. Have someone else hold the collar while the dog is being clipped, or simply fasten the leash to the support attached to the grooming table.
3. Place the dog on the table top in order to work at eye level. Use treats to calm the dog if necessary.
4. Shave the dog, starting with the face first. Slowly move along the dog's head, neck and sides in the direction of the hair. Move slowly, so the dog does not become frightened. Leave about an inch of fur on the dog.
5. Shave the tail slowly in the direction of the hair, holding the end of the tail with one hand and the clippers with the other. Clip the legs in the same way, gently holding each paw in place with a free hand.
6. Pull the skin slightly to shave the dog's belly and the creases of the legs. The belly of a heavy coated dog could be matted, so work with caution and patience. Double check you reached all areas with the clippers.
7. Brush the dog lightly to remove excess loose hair; take the dog off the table. Give him a dog treat and remove the collar and leash. Clean the clippers and all blades used. Pick up and discard the trash bags and fur.
