A microchip is your dog's link back to you.
For the safety of your dog, and for your peace of mind in the event he is stolen or missing, a microchip should be implanted under the skin on the back of your dog's neck. Each microchip contains vital information about your dog, such as a telephone number to reach you and where his permanent home is. It is very important that the information is kept up to date.
Instructions
1. Locate the contact information for the microchip company with which your dog is registered. This information is available in the microchip documentation papers that your vet should have given you after completing the microchip implantation. They will be able to quickly update your dog's information electronically. This is the easiest method, but owners sometimes do not have the original microchip documents.
2. Contact the vet or clinic that implanted the chip if you do not have the contact information for the company your dog is registered with. The vet or clinic will have a record of that information. This is why it is important to keep records of the veterinarians your dog visits throughout his life and the procedures he undergoes with each one.
3. Call the microchip company your dog is registered with and update all contact information on your dog's microchip. Make sure to double-check that they have entered the correct phone number and address by asking them to repeat it to you.
4. Update this information online in the future, if desired. Once you know the name of the company that registered your dog's microchip, you also might have the option to update the contact information online through their website. This can be a much quicker and easier method.
