Become A Foster Home For Cats

Become a Foster Home for Cats

Fostering cats is a very rewarding job. It can be emotional, when it is time to let the cat go, but knowing you saved the life of a cat and made a difference, is worth it. Taking a few steps ahead of time will ensure that you have a wonderful fostering experience.

Instructions

1. Prepare your home. Take all the necessary precautions to prepare your home for a new cat. Make sure there are no "escapes" the cat can find, and make sure all duct work is properly sealed. A scared cat will dive in anywhere to hide.

2. Read up on cat behavior. Learn everything you can. Your new cat may have some issues and may be scared at first. Learning deal with that is crucial.

3. Locate a local cat rescue. If you are unsure of any cat rescues near you, try looking them up on "Petfinder" or "1800saveapet." These sites are national website databases for rescue groups. Most Humane Societies and Animal Protective League's need foster homes for cats as well.

4. Meet with the rescue group. Meet with them to make sure you like their philosophy and their rules and regulations. Make sure you discuss what is required of a foster home, and how the process works. Also make sure to find out if they provide food, supplies or vet care.

5. Bring the new cat home. Now it is time to give the cat lots of love. It will be hard to let them go, but remember, once one cat goes to their new home, there is room in your foster home to save another one.
