Donate A Car To A Charity In Northern Virginia

Some charities accept automobile donations.

There are a variety of charities that accept automobile donations. Two of the most recognized groups -- the National Kidney Foundation and Goodwill Industries -- each accept cars for donation in Northern Virginia. Other groups, such as churches and animal shelters, also accept automobile donations. Vehicles eligible for donation can include cars, trucks, boats, motor homes and heavy equipment. Donation rules can vary slightly by group, so it is a good idea to check with any charity before making an automobile donation.

Instructions

1. Contact the organization to which you wish to donate your vehicle. Most organizations will start the donation process with a phone call or through an online form. The initial contact will help you determine if the program is right for you, and, as a result of this step, the organization will mail the paperwork that needs to be completed.

2. Gather the vehicle information and complete the donation paperwork. In Virginia, the car title must be signed over to the charity at the time of donation. The signed title must also include the car's odometer reading.

3. Mail or deliver the donation information packet back to the organization. Some groups, such as the National Kidney Foundation, will contact you to schedule when to pick up the vehicle. Other groups will work with you to arrange a time to drop off the vehicle.

4. Obtain a tax receipt from the charity. Qualified automobile donations are eligible for tax deductions (up to the sale value of the vehicle).
