Types Of Big Breeds Of House Cats

Large breeds take up more space, but they are just as friendly as smaller breeds.

The Maine Coon is just one of hundreds of large domestic house cat breeds. These breeds have thick, heavy coats and larger features when compared with smaller breeds. Even very large domestic cats such as the Savannah can be affectionate and playful like smaller felines.

Savannah and Ashera

The Savannah is a very large, spotted domestic cat that looks ferocious, but this breed has a sweet, playful temperament just like many other domesticated cats. The Savannah's coat is brownish white with black spots. The breed was created by mixing the African serval cat with a domestic Bengal cat. Bengal cats are also cross-breeds, which were created by breeding a domestic cat with an Asian leopard cat.

The Ashera is closely related to the Savannah, and there is some speculation about whether or not the Ashera can stand alone as a distinct breed. The Ashera is a colossal house cat that can stand as tall as four feet on its hind legs. This breed can weigh up to 30 lbs. Rare breeds such as the Ashera are expensive; the MSNBC website says the price for an Ashera cat typically exceeds $20,000. The breed is a cross of the Asian Leopard cat and African Serval cat with a domestic cat. The Ashera is generally spotted, but some variations in the coat are seen due to the cross-breeding. Some cats are born with solid colors or darker markings.

Ragdoll

The Ragdoll is a large domestic breed with a very mellow temperament. Ragdolls have long, fluffy coats and thick paws. These cats' coats are generally white or cream or colored with dark brown and black markings around the face and tail. However, some Ragdolls have very dark markings around their faces and coats, with white paws and stomachs.

Maine Coon

The Maine Coon is a large domestic cat with a friendly personality. Maine Coons have long, thick fur and robust features including thick paws and a large facial bone structure. Their bones are thick and heavy, and many Maine Coons weigh 10 lbs. or more. This breed has a thick winter coat that sheds excessively in the summer. Maine Coon coats also have a huge variation of colors and patterns such as striped tabby and solid orange.
