Perhaps, for one reason or another, you can no longer care for your dogs. Perhaps you have an unexpected litter of puppies to re-home. Perhaps a stray dog or two appeared and no owners have come to claim them. Whatever the reason for wanting to sign up a dog for adoption, there are some simple steps you can take to ensure that the canines in question get the best home possible.
Instructions
1. Research your local shelters, rescues, and organizations that work with dogs. Ask questions about their policies--do they provide medical care for the dog? Will it be spayed or neutered, or will you be required to provide this service? Is the facility a "no kill" facility, or do they euthanize animals when space runs out?
2. Speak with your veterinarian or a local veterinarian. They may be able to provide you with the name of a facility or organization that will take the dogs.
3. Choose a facility based upon your needs and wants. Some organizations specialize in providing adoption services for dogs of a certain breed. Others work with mixed breed dogs. Choosing a low or no kill facility ensures that the dogs will have a better chance of being adopted.
4. Consider visiting the home of potential adopters, charging a fee, and drawing up an adoption contract if you are adopting the dogs through a venue such as classified advertisements, word of mouth or fliers. According to the Humane Society of the United States, this ensures that the dogs are going to a home, rather than being gathered for unsavory purposes.
5. Be honest when speaking about any problems the dogs may have. If they are not housetrained, have behavioral problems or medical issues, speak candidly about these. While they do not improve the dogs chances of being adopted, those caring for the dog in the interim will appreciate the knowledge and forewarning and be able to find a suitable home for the dogs.
