Finding a quality Bichon Frise puppy will help ensure a happy and healthy friendship.
The American Kennel Club is an excellent source for locating a Bichon Frise puppy. The organization, which recognizes over 160 breeds, advocates choosing a purebred dog so you know what to expect in personality, physical appearance, activity level and any special needs indicative of the breed. To find a quality puppy that is not the product of a puppy mill, where overbreeding leads to disease-prone animals, stay with AKC-registered breeders who monitor the frequency and parentage of their breed stock.
Instructions
1. Visit the AKC website and select the "Breeders" tab. Click "Breeder Referral" from the side bar for a listing of AKC Referral Contacts. Scroll down to Bichon Frise. There are listings for Breeder Referral and for Parent Club. Click the "Parent Club" link. Under Bichon Frise Information, click "Breeders Directory and Info Source." A table displays with breeders by state. Find your state and contact the breeder.
2. Rescue a Bichon puppy. At the AKC site under Bichon Frise, click the "Bichon Frise Club of America" link. Select the "Bichon Rescue" link and select "Bichons for Adoption." A list of adoptable dogs displays complete with pictures.
3. Attend a dog show. Click the "Events" tab from the AKC home page. Select your state for a listing of upcoming shows. Talk with Bichon Frise breeders. Some breeders sell puppies at these shows or can refer you to local breeders who may put you on a wait list for their next litter.
4. Visit dog parks and talk to Bichon Frise owners. Ask them if they would recommend their breeder.
