Plant A Tree For A Loved One Who Has Died

A tree can serve as a living memorial.

Planting a tree for a deceased loved one gives the world a living memorial. One tree that has special meaning as a memorial is the ginko. The ginko tree is revered for its longevity, according to the Japanese American Museum. It is considered a bearer of hope and a symbol of peace. In addition, the ginko is a hearty tree that can withstand the environmental stresses of urban areas, according to the museum. This make it both a practical and a symbolic choice. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose the variety of ginko that you want to plant. Although ginko varieties such as 'Tremonia' can grow quite large, others can be grown in small gardens. The dwarf 'Troll' variety is even suitable for a container. TreeHelp.com suggests buying a male ginkgo tree, because the female tree produces a foul-smelling fruit.

2. Choose the right spot for your ginkgo tree. The ginko can survive in zones 4 through 9, making it suitable as far north as Montana and as far south as Florida. It can thrive in both sunny and shady areas. If you are planting the tree on your own property, you might want to put in a spot where you can see it when you look out the window. Or you might want to create a peaceful area where you can go and spend a few quiet moments.

3. Plant the tree. The website BigPlantNursery advises digging a hole twice as wide and a little deeper than the root ball. Break up the bottom of the hole and add a compost-grit mixture. Remove the plant from the pot and water if it is dry, ideally by soaking in a bucket of water until all of the air bubbles have disappeared, according to BigPlantNursery. Secure the tree in the hole. Mix the soil you have removed from the hole with the compost-grit mixture, and fill in around the root ball. Water well. Finish with a bark mulch and keep it moist but not waterlogged through the first growing season.
