Donate Pet Food To An Animal Shelter

Animal shelters help animals who are abused or abandoned. These shelters usually depend on donations from the public to stay open and continue helping animals. Donating pet food to animal shelters is a good way to help them with caring for homeless animals in your area.

Instructions

1. Contact your local animal shelter to find out what they need. Sometimes, there may be a surplus of cat food and a shortage of dog food. What the shelter needs will change often so check with them before every donation. Ask if there is a certain brand of food they need. Some animals have health conditions and need certain types of food.

2. Decide how much you can spend on pet food to donate to the animal shelter. If possible, try to include regular donations into your budget.

3. Pick out the pet food you will donate. Keep in mind that cheap food may seem like a good deal but you get what you pay for. Cheap food is often lacking in nutrients that pets need to thrive. You may get a larger quantity of food by buying off brands but you will get quality if you stick to premium brands. Animals in shelters are usually recovering from abuse or starvation and they need good food to do that.

4. Bring the pet food to the animal shelter. Make sure that you pick a time when the shelter will be open. Pet food left outside may attract wild animals that can introduce disease to the captive-bred animals living in the shelter.

5. Get proof of your donation for tax purposes if needed. Have them write out the brand, weight of each bag and quantity on a piece of paper. You can then attach the receipt from the store to the proof of donation.

6. Consider donating your time to the animal shelter in addition to the pet food. Most shelters need people to feed the animals or walk dogs. If you do this, you can enjoy the benefits of your pet food donation.
