Specific rules apply to pets riding in cars for safety reasons.
Just as fir humans, laws are in place in California for pets in cars. Most often the laws are directed towards dogs, though all pets should be safe whenever riding or left in cars.
Dog Restraints
California has specific laws in regards to restraining pets while riding in cars. Most pet stores sell car seats and harnesses that attach to car seats and provide for a safer ride for your dog. In the event of opening a window, your pet cannot jump out and get hurt. With your pet safely secured, there is no danger of the pet interrupting your driving or being injured if you have to suddenly stop the vehicle.
Open Vehicle
California law requires dogs in the back of pickup trucks or open cars to be either in a cage or strapped to the vehicle. This prevents the dog from being "thrown" from the vehicle or jumping out.
Unattended Pets
The law in California is very strict about pets left unattended in a vehicle. Even a small crack on a window will not protect your pet from excessive heat and danger to overexposure. Pet owners who leave the pets in a car unattended under dangerous conditions could face jail time and/or monetary fines.
