Claim Ivf Expenses On Your Tax Return

You must use Form 1040 to deduct itemized deductions, including medical expenses such as IVF.

In virtro fertilization, or IVF, assists couples struggling with infertility to have children. The process can be expensive, but you may be able to claim an income tax deduction for the costs, which can make it more affordable. The IRS classifies IVF as a deductible medical expense. As of January 2011, you can write off the amount of your medical expenses that exceed 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income. You cannot, however, include any costs for which you receive reimbursement.

Instructions

1. Elect to itemize your deductions instead of claiming the standard deduction. You can only write off your IVF expenses if you itemize your deductions. To itemize, file your tax return with Form 1040 and report your itemized deduction on Schedule A.

2. Enter your IVF expenses, along with any other medical expenses you paid during the year, on line 1 of Schedule A.

3. Enter your adjusted gross income from line 38 of Form 1040 on line 2 of Schedule A.

4. Multiply your adjusted gross income by 0.075 and report the result on line 3.

5. Subtract 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income (the amount on line 3) from your total medical and dental expenses, including your IVF expenses and report the result on line 4. This amount reduces your taxable income for the year.

6. Report the total of your itemized deductions, including your IVF deduction, on line 29 of Schedule A and line 40 of Form 1040. This amount decreases your taxable income.
