Keep a Puppy Calm After Spaying
Most female puppies go home the day after spay surgery "as if nothing had happened," states the Mar Vista Animal Medical Center in its article, "The Canine Spay." The procedure involves the removal of the uterus and ovaries and, while commonly performed, still is considered major surgery. Veterinarians recommend that owners keep their puppies calm and quiet for the week after surgery to allow for healing and to prevent any complications at the surgical site.
Instructions
1. Administer any prescribed pain medications. They commonly make your puppy sleepy and will allow her to rest comfortably.
2. Keep your puppy in a quiet room in your house away from other animals. You may want to leave her in her crate, except for potty breaks, for the first few days until she begins to comfortably move around.
3. Handle your dog on a leash during bathroom breaks. This will discourage her from running and jumping, and possibly opening her surgical site.
4. Prevent your puppy from jumping on furniture or other people until after the incision has healed.
5. Stop her from rolling and getting dirty during the recuperation period. Veterinarians typically recommend that she not be bathed until after the sutures are removed.
