What Jobs Work With Animals

A job working with animals can be a satisfying way to interact with nature while at the same time earning ann income. There are many different kinds of jobs that involve working with animals. Some jobs may involve caring for the medical needs of animals or teaching them to perform for an audience. Others may involve scientific research or interacting with pet owners.

Veterinarians

Veterinarians care for the medical needs of animals. In order to become a vet one must complete a four-year undergraduate degree and then graduate from veterinary school. A vet may work with a wide variety of animals. Some vets work in rural areas and specialize in working with farm animals. Others may work primarily in a suburban setting and treat dogs, cats and birds. A veterinarian may perform surgery on a zebra, spay a dog or set a ferret's broken leg.

Pet Sitters

Pet sitters take care of an owner's pet when the owner has to be away for a period of time. A pet sitter makes sure the animal has enough food and water and that animal gets any needed exercise. They may walk a dog or let a bird fly out of a cage. A pet sitter usually cares for the animal in its owner's home.

Farmers

Many farmers work with animals. A farmer may specialize in growing a specific kind of animal such as cows or pigs, or they may choose to raise many different kinds of animals. A farmer may raise chickens to sell the eggs and turkeys to slaughter at Thanksgiving. Farmers interact with animals frequently; they feed them and clean out their living quarters. A farmer may also have a cat to catch mice and a dog to help herd sheep or cattle.

Pet Shop Owners

Pet shop owners provide items for sale to help care for animals. A pet shop owner may also sell small animals such as hamsters, cats and dogs, or fish and birds. A pet shop may be an independently owned store or part of a larger chain of stores. Many pet shop owners also provide other services for animals such as dog grooming and abandoned animal adoption sponsorship.

Keepers

Keepers work in zoos and aquariums. They help care for exotic animals as well as teach some animals to perform tricks such as balancing a ball on their nose. Keepers also participate in scientific research about animal behavior. They may investigate how bonds are formed between mating pairs or best care for an animal with a rare disease.
