Deduct Pet Food On State Tax Returns

Service dogs are tax deductible.

Only certain pet-related deductions currently exist for pet owners. The most common pet-related deduction is for people who rely on guide dogs because of visual, hearing or other physical impairment. Owners of these animals can deduct the cost of acquiring and caring for these pets. People who own guard dogs to protect their businesses and inventory are allowed to deduct the cost of caring for their security dog, but not the cost of acquiring them. Those who work in the pet sports world such as dog shows, agility and obedience trainers are also able to deduct the cost of care for their pets.

Instructions

1. Enter in the costs of your pet expenses under the line for medical deductions, if your pet is a guide dog or service dog.

2. Enter in the costs of your pet expenses under the line for business expenses, if your pet is integral to your business in such cases as seminar presenter, trial judge or security dog.

3. File receipts of all guide or business dog expenses with copies of your finished taxes in case you are audited.
