Hot Dog Restaurants In Nyc

The hot dog is a signature food item in New York City.

Hot dogs, also known as frankfurters or wieners, are one of the signature foods in the Big Apple. Thousands of street vendors serve up hot dogs with sauerkraut and mustard for hungry New Yorkers every day. Every Fourth of July, Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest brings marathon carnivores to New York's Coney Island. The city is also home to numerous eateries that specialize in this humble fare, sometimes dressed up with organic, gourmet ingredients. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Papaya King

Described by Zagat's Guide as being "as vital to NYC as the subway," Papaya King serves up fruit smoothies and hot dogs from several of its joints opened across Manhattan since the restaurant's founding in 1932. Though several competitors exist, Papaya King bills itself as the original, with the slogan "Better Than Filet Mignon."

Shake Shack

While the original Shake Shack location is in Madison Square Park, the chain has grown to include several Manhattan outposts, as well as one each in Miami and Syracuse, NY. Resembling a roadside burger joint, the restaurant serves a variety of hot dog specialties, including the Shack-cago Dog--a hotdog with many different toppings. The Shake Shack menu also includes other American classics, including burgers, fries, and milkshakes. Beer and wine are also offered on the menu.

Dogmatic

Developed from what was once just a hot dog cart in New York's West Village, Dogmatic is located just off Union Square. All Dogmatic dogs are made of meat that is free from antibiotics, nitrates, and added hormones, and the vegetarian asparagus dogs are made from locally-grown ingredients. Lamb and chicken hot dogs are offered in addition to the more traditional ones made of beef, pork, and turkey. To top off your dog, the menu includes gourmet sauces such as Truffle Gruyere and Mint Yogurt.
