While we all rejoice the fact that the American alligator is no longer on the endangered species list, hiking with your dog, or even living near the swampy coasts from North Carolina to Texas can be an alligator-ridden hazard. Alligators, which are found in swamps, rivers, lakes, marshes and even drainage ditches in your neighborhood, can easily snatch your dog as prey. Your canine pal should not be an alligator snack, so learn protect him from an attack.
Instructions
1. Call local animal control authorities when you see large alligators in the ponds or streams on your property or where you walk your dog. This will help keep dangerous gators out of your dog's environment.
2. Keep your dog on a leash at all times, when in the vicinity of alligator habitats.
3. Use common sense and never allow your dog to swim or play in waters where alligators may live. Though it may spoil his fun, it is for his own good.
4. Gator-proof your backyard, so that your dog can have a safe, alligator-free environment to run and play in. Check the fencing regularly, for holes or areas where the dog can escape through.
