Locate A Pet Owner Via A Rabies Tag

All dogs are required to have a current rabies tag.

Rabies vaccination tags are required for pets in all 50 states. Some states have laws that require finders of lost pets to turn them over to local animal control offices, but in other cases the person who finds the lost pet can help return the pet to its owner. The local offices will contact the owners using the information provided on the pet's rabies tags. In many counties and states, veterinarians are also required to keep records of all vaccinated pets and their owners.

Instructions

1. Observe the stray pet before approaching. Approach only if the pet appears friendly and healthy.

2. Hold the pet gently while searching the collar for a rabies tag.

3. Turn the rabies tag over and take note of the phone number and tag number. Every rabies tag has a unique tag number assigned to it and that individual pet.

4. Call the phone number and give the ID number plus a description of the pet. In some counties the number will be to a veterinary office, however, other counties require rabies tag inquiries go to animal control. In either case, the office will have the owner's name and address on file.

5. Confine the stray pet in a separate clean, safe area away from other pets and children until the owners can be reached. Until you know the health conditions of stray animals it is best not to expose them to your pets.
