About Animal Photography Careers

If you're a photographer who loves animals, you could consider combining your passions to become an animal photographer. Whether it's wildlife or pets, it's possible to have a steady career photographing animals.

Stock Photography

There are many sites available for photographers to post their pictures and allow others to buy rights to use those pictures. As an animal photographer, you have the opportunity to share your talents with hundreds and even thousands of businesses that could publish your photos. Royalties will vary and it is important to read the fine print before sharing any of your work. However, this is an easy way to get your feet wet.

Pet Portraits

Many people will spend money to have photos taken of their pets. You may wish to have a studio where people bring in their pets, or you can visit the pets in their homes. Photo items like mugs, T-shirts and mouse pads are popular for pet portrait display.

Freelance Photojournalist

Many publications use freelance photojournalists. Contact magazines and newspapers that you already know and express your interest in being an animal photojournalist.

Shelters or Pet Adoption Facilities

Many shelters and adoption facilities publicize photos of the animals they currently have for adoption on websites, newspapers and bulletin boards. The pictures must be attractive to the audience and capture a side of the animal that will make someone want to adopt it. This is often a volunteer position or it pays a minimal amount.

Fine Art Animal Photography

If you are able to capture special moments with an animal, frame it or mat it and take it to a local art museum or art gallery. Talk to curators in your area and provide samples of your work.
