A Shih Tzu dog sits calmly and enjoys the view.

Man's best friend comes in all shapes and sizes, as is the case with the Shih Tzu. These friendly little dogs are warm and cheerful and adapt well to children and adults.

The History of the Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu gained the nickname Chrysanthemum Dog in England.

A gift to the Chinese court from the Byzantine Empire, Shih Tzu dogs date to the 6th century, making them one of the most ancient breed of dogs. They were highly favored and closely protected by the Chinese. Toward the beginning of the 20th century, these special little creatures made their way to other parts of the world including England and other parts of Europe.

Shape, Size and Color of the Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu are considered lap dogs because of their size.

The Shih Tzu is a tiny breed of dog with deep eyes, averaging approximately 9 to 11 inches in height and weighing no more than 18 pounds. Shih Tzu dogs have long coats of hair and the most common colors of the Shih Tzu are a combination of white, black, brown and tan. Often you will see a Shih Tzu with a bow or barrette to keep its long hair out of its eyes.

Lifestyle and Lifespan of a Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu are very energetic but aren't comfortable in warm temperatures.

Although not the easiest to train, Shih Tzu dogs are very social and playful. They get along well with other types of dogs and tend not to bark unless they hear people approaching. Shih Tzu dogs live an average of 14 to 18 years, which is a long life for a dog. Shitzu are short muzzled and therefore sensitive to high temperatures.

Keep in Mind When Choosing a Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu love to play.

Shih Tzu have long hair that needs to be brushed daily to prevent tangling. Despite not needing as much exercise as other types of dogs, all Shih Tzu enjoy a daily walk. Because they have small centrally located nose, they tend to snore and wheeze. Although lovable and mild tempered, Shih Tzu are not easily trained and don't take to learning tricks.

Fun and Friendly Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu are loyal and content to live in smaller dwellings.

Shih Tzu are great little pets for kids, teens, adults and senior citizens. These charming dogs are proud and graceful and will easily win their owner's heart.
