Having a Newfoundland dog is like having a huge, hairy black Labrador retriever. Since they are so big, it takes a certain owner who is ready for all the hair--and drool--that come with owning such an animal. If you live in Los Angeles, there are a couple of places you can check to see about rescuing one of these gentle giants, and there are always rescues that will ship the dogs.

Adopt a Newfoundland in Los Angeles
1. First check the online sites Petharbor and Petfinder. Petharbor lists dogs in shelters near you. Petfinder will show you a list of dogs in rescue groups, and you can check classified ads for private owner listings. A rescue group will charge a higher fee than a shelter or a personal owner, because these dogs have been screened and you'll know just what you're getting.
2. Check in with Autumn Acres. It's in Kansas but has rescue on the West coast. They will steer you to any needy Newfoundland dog in Los Angeles
3. Try the Great Pyrenees Rescue Association of Southern California. It occasionally will have a Newfoundland mix, and they know their animals well. Expect to pay $300 when adopting.
4. Check Adopt a Saint - Saint Bernard Rescue, in Orange. They take in Newfoundlands in need, too.
5. Look up Canine Canyon Ranch. This rescue is two hours east of Los Angeles in Tehachapi. They rescue larger-breed dogs from shelters and take them in until they can be adopted.
