Medical technology is a broad field that can encompass many health care careers. Clinical laboratory technicians, medical assistants and lab technologists all apply medical tools to the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Some schools located near Fort Stewart, Georgia, offer degree programs in the field of medical technology.


Armstrong Atlantic State University


Armstrong Atlantic State University is a four-year public institution about 20 miles outside Fort Stewart in Savannah. The school has a student population of more than 7,500, making it the largest educational institution near Fort Stewart to offer a degree program in medical technology. The school offers a bachelor of science in medical technology degree program that is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Students learn the basics of urinalysis, microbiology, blood banking, hematology and serology. They also learn work in a clinical or laboratory setting.


Savannah Technical College


Savannah Technical College, a two-year public school 56 minutes northeast of Fort Stewart, offers associate's degree and diploma programs in paramedic technology and surgical technology. Though these programs do not prepare graduates to become clinical laboratory technicians, they teach students to work with medical equipment to provide emergency medical care in pre-hospital or surgical settings. Core courses introduce students to concepts in human anatomy, physiology and medical terminology. More advanced courses cover patient assessment and surgical procedures.


Ogeechee Technical College


Ogeechee Technical College, part of the Technical College System of Georgia, is roughly 30 miles outside of Fort Stewart in Statesboro. The school offers a few programs related to the field of medical technology, including an emergency medical technician certificate program, a medical assisting diploma program, a paramedic technology diploma, a phlebotomy technician certificate, a radiologic technology diploma and a surgical technology diploma.


Altamaha Technical College


Altamaha Technical College, an hour and 15 minutes west of Fort Stewart, is a two-year vocational school designed to provide students with the technical skills and education to find an entry-level position in a particular career. The school offers diploma programs in medical assisting as well as paramedic technology. The paramedic technology program provides an overview of patient assessment, physiology, cardiology and respiratory emergencies. Students also learn to apply those concepts in a clinical setting.
