Delete Ds Store

Burn discs for friends without burdening them with Mac OS index files.

When you use your Apple Mac to browse or read files from any folder or external drive, the computer creates a file called "DS_Store" within that folder or drive. These files are used by the machine for indexing purposes, but they can be removed without any ill effect. If you're planning on passing files or drives on to non-Mac owners, in fact, deleting the DS_Store files is a good idea, as they can make external or optical discs harder to read on some systems. Programs exist to make deleting DS_Store files easy.

Instructions

1. Download AppleOff or DS_Store Cleaner (see Resources).

2. Double-click the downloaded file to unzip and drag the program to your "Applications" menu (or desktop, if you're using AppleOff on a PC) to install. From here, the program can be dragged OS X's Dock for ease of use.

3. Use "Finder" or "My Computer" to navigate to the folder or drive you want to clear of DS_Store files.

4. Drag the folder or drive onto the program icon for your removal program. All DS_Store files in all sub-directories of the drive or folder will be deleted automatically. This does not affect accessibility on Mac or PC.
