Police Dog and Handler
The NSW Police Dog Unit is part of the Specialist Operations arm of the New South Wales Police. Canine tasks such as drug detection, cadaver search, explosives, etc., are provided by qualified police officers with specialist dog handling qualifications. Individuals must qualify as a police officer first before undertaking dog-handling training. There are three main routes to qualify as a NSW Police Officer (http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/recruitment).

NSW Police Training
1. GENERAL TRAINING (POLICE TRAINING COLLEGE) - ROUTE 1
An Associate Degree of Policing Practices course can be completed at the Police Training College in Goulburn. This is a two-year, full-time course of 30 hours per week in Year 1 and 40 hours per week in Year 2 (http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/recruitment/police_training_and_education).
2. GRADUATE TRAINING (UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN SYDNEY) - ROUTE 2
UWS offers a three-year Bachelor of Policing Degree. Topics of study include the history of the NSW police force and general, broad-based police learning, with an opportunity to investigate the role of the specialist police units (http://www.myfuture.uws.edu.au/ug/policing/bachelor_of_policing).
3. GRADUATE TRAINING (CHARLES STURT UNIVERSITY) - ROUTE 3
A three-year course, the first two years of the Bachelor of Justice Studies are based at Bathurst, NSW, and part of the third year at the Police College in Goulburn. After the first trimester of the third year, if your study has been successful, you will qualify as Probationary Constable (http://www.csu.edu.au/courses/undergraduate/justice_policing).
4. SPECIALIST TRAINING
After graduating as a qualified NSW Police officer, individuals must perform three years of generalist service before applying for a post as a dog handler(http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/recruitment/police_career/role_and_careers). The NSW police force accepts internal applicants only for dog-handler training. The specialist training is undertaken at the Police Training College in Goulburn, which partners previously identified suitable dogs with human handlers for intensive training.
This expert course includes study in dog protection, general dog tasks, obedience and handler/dog relationship to enable the dog and handler to provide all operational support services to the NSW police force.
5. POST-TRAINING PLACEMENT - NSW DOG SQUADS
There are four regional NSW dog squads, based in Bass Hill, Mt Druitt, Engadine and Berowra, NSW, plus three teams at the Police College in Goulburn. Police dog handlers can request placement in any of those regions. In total, NSW has 59 dog teams (including three based at the Training College in Goulburn).
