Domestic Adoption Agencies Colorado

Domestic Adoption Agencies Colorado

Prospective adoptive parents looking to adopt in Colorado have an intense journey ahead of them. Deciding whether to adopt an infant, older child, a child with extra needs or a minority child requires finding out what is best for you and the child. Colorado has numerous adoption agencies that can help you on the adoption journey.

Choosing the Agency

The Adoption Exchange Adoption Information Booklet provides suggestions and lists several questions to ask when deciding on which adoption agency to work with. People considering adoption should speak with adoptive parents for advice and most adoption agencies provide general orientation meetings that prospective parents can attend. Some key questions to ask while interviewing agencies include: What type of agency is it (nonprofit or for-profit organization); what types of children are placed by the agency; in the previous year, how many children were successfully placed; what are the general requirements; what is the entire cost of adopting; how long will the process of adoption usually last; and what will the agency do in order to find the right child for prospective adoptive parents?

Closed vs. Open Adoption

Closed adoption is when personal information about the birth parents and adoptive parents are closed from each other. The records are protected under state law or court order. Open adoption allows the birth parents to stay in contact with the adoptive family, based on mutual agreement by both parties. A semi-open adoption is when there is an intermediary, generally the adoption agency, that facilitates indirect contact between the adoptive and birth family.

Creative Adoptions is a nonprofit adoption agency in Colorado that specializes in open adoption.

Colorado Christian Services provides traditional (closed), semi-open and open adoption. Couples, age 21 to 40, must be married for two or more years, be active Christians, have health insurance and an income that will be able to support the child.

Adopting children from foster care usually has no fees attached. If there are fees, they are generally refunded when the child is adopted.
