Report An Internet Fraud Or Scam

The IC3 is co-sponsored by the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center.

The Internet can be a dangerous place. The anonymity it provides allows many devious people to delude and defraud others while escaping detection. Many Internet scams, like Nigerian prince scams, have gained widespread awareness. However, criminals find new ways to defraud innocent people every day. If you are unfortunate enough to be the victim of an Internet scam, you can help federal law enforcement agents target the criminals by reporting the incident to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, or IC3, which is affiliated with the FBI.

Instructions

1. Gather the information you will need to provide, including your contact information, all of the contact information you have available for the entity that defrauded you, details about how you were defrauded and any other pertinent information you have.

2. Navigate to the IC3 website (link in Resources).

3. Click on the "File a Complaint" link.

4. Read the information on the Web page that appears, and then click the "I Accept" button.

5. Work through the onscreen wizard to provide all of the information regarding your complaint. This information will be reviewed by an analyst and forwarded to the appropriate law enforcement agency.

6. Retain any relevant evidence in case you are contacted by a detective with a law enforcement agency. This may occur long after you file your complaint, depending on the case. Note that the decision of whether to pursue the case will be made by the agency that receives the case, not by the IC3.
