Disinfect Horse Combs And Brushes

Regularly grooming and brushing a horse is one of the keys to good health and hygiene.

One of the primary responsibilities of a horse owner or caretaker is the health and hygiene of their animals. A clean and well groomed horse is less likely to develop or spread health problems such as skin or respiratory conditions. If the grooming supplies, including brushes and combs, are not also kept clean, they can actively cause the development and spread of bacteria, viruses or other contagious materials. Regularly cleaning and disinfecting grooming tools can help keep horses happy and healthy.

Instructions

1. Remove hair and debris from the brush and comb. It is difficult, if not impossible, to fully clean a brush or comb that is matted with hair, dirt or other materials. If the grooming tool is heavily matted, you may need to use scissors or other cutting tool to help clear the brush or comb.

2. Wash brushes and combs in clean hot water mixed with a mild dish detergent. While submerged in the water, scrub the brush and combs to dislodge any remaining residue, such as dander or oils. The water should be hot enough to clean the grooming tools but not so hot as to burn your hands.

3. Soak the brushes and combs in a disinfectant solution. Use a disinfectant that is designed to kill germs and bacteria. Mix the solution with water as directed by the manufacturer's instructions. Soak the grooming tools in the solution for at least 30 minutes before removing.

4. Allow the soaked grooming tools to air dry before using. The best method for drying the tools is laying them in the sun on a clean surface. The use of heat, or other accelerated drying methods, may damage the bristles or teeth of the grooming tools. Once the brushes and combs are fully dry, they can be safely used again.
