Find A Lost Skittish Cat

When a skittish cat finds herself lost outside her home, she will instinctively revert to the behavior of a feral cat. She will hide very quietly, remain still and will usually not come when called, making her more difficult to find. It may seem like an impossible task to find your lost cat, but do not give up. Lost cats do not usually stray very far from home and there are proven techniques you can use to get your cat back safely.

Instructions

1. Start looking for your cat as soon as possible. Cats are territorial by nature and will usually remain close to your home, unless frightened away.

2. Get the word out. Call the Humane Society and Animal Control closest to your home. Provide them with a description of your cat, should someone find him. Call the veterinarian clinics and pet shops in your area, talk to neighbors within three to four miles of your home, and alert your postal worker.

3. Hang flyers with pictures of your cat and offer a small reward to motivate neighborhood children, who often know of hiding spots, to search for your cat. Post an ad in the local paper and check the classified section daily to see if your cat has been found.

4. Search your neighborhood both during the day and at night. Shake a box of cat treats or a bag of food. Listen carefully for signs of your cat. Use a flashlight to look in small and unlikely places. Look under porches, in trees (even for declawed cats) and in garages.

5. Place some strong-smelling food and water close to your home. Your cat might eat the food and go right back to hiding, but she will be encouraged to stay close. Place a piece of your worn clothing and some of her toys nearby so that your cat can smell your scent and her home.

6. Approach your cat very slowly and quietly, should you see him. Call your cat softly, with the awareness that even though he knows you, he will probably not respond due to fear.

7. Wear gloves so that if you pick your cat up, she will not scratch and claw you in an attempt to get away. The lost, skittish cat's instinct is to run, even from its owner.

8. As time goes by, increase your search radius.
