Apply for a Federal Grant for a Tornado-Safe Room
Many places are not equipped to protect people if a tornado strikes. If you can prove that a place you know where people congregate needs more adequate tornado protection, though, you can apply for a federal grant for a tornado-safe room. By following the right steps, you can help make your neighborhood a safer place to be, even when disaster strikes.
Instructions
1. Make sure you are living in a state where a tornado has struck within the last three years. Places that rarely get hit by tornadoes will not receive government assistance.
2. Know the economic status of the area. A lower- or medium-level economic situation is more likely to qualify for a grant than a place that has a higher average income.
3. Find the right place to install the tornado-safe room. You are more likely to receive a grant if there are at least 20 housing units nearby that would be able to access the room. A neighborhood park, for instance, makes a great place to put one of these rooms.
4. Call the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at (800) 621-3362 and say that you are interested in a federal grant for a tornado safe room through the Tornado Shelters Act (Public Law 108-146). A representative will provide you with an application.
5. Fill out the application. Make sure to include every useful piece of information you have since there are not unlimited federal grants to be handed out.
