Donate A Dog For Service In Washington State

Donate your dog to help those who need assistance.

Service dogs are dogs that have been professionally trained to assist people with disabilities or to assist members of law enforcement with specific tasks like drug enforcement and crime scene duties. Service dogs are allowed in Washington state; however, it is best to begin with a query to a service dog organization to find out the feasibility of donating your dog for service training.

Instructions

1. Make a list of service dog organizations in Washington state, specifically those that are in close proximity to your home. You can check online at the Internal Revenue's Web site to see if the organization is a registered nonprofit.

2. Call reputable service dog nonprofits and ask if the organization accepts dogs for service training. Several service dog organizations in Washington state accept donations for money but not necessarily dogs. Organizations often breed their own dogs for service training or get their dogs from animal shelters and humane societies. The dogs first must be screened for their projected success in becoming service dogs.

3. Schedule an appointment at a Washington state service dog organization, if the organization is willing to take a look at your dog. You can take the dog to the organization for a visit, and staff can evaluate the dog's ability to become a service dog.
