A vaccinated and licensed Chihuahua is a safer Chihuahua.
Losing a Chihuahua puppy is sad and stressful for the dog owner and the puppy, but registered pets wear tags that make them easily identifiable by the authorities or citizens who find them. Registered Chihuahuas, like other dogs -- as well as cats -- in Los Angeles County are more likely to be returned to their owners than unregistered pets. Furthermore, it is against the law to keep a Chihuahua that is not registered in LA County. Chihuahua licensing is easy and does not require you to leave your home.

Prepare Registration Fees and Required Documentation
1. Request evidence of current rabies vaccination from your Chihuahua's veterinarian if you don't already have such proof.
2. Obtain proof of spaying or neutering from your Chihuahua's veterinarian. Spaying and neutering your dog is required by law unless your pet qualifies for one of these four exemptions: for medical reasons or if it is a law enforcement dog, a service dog or a competition dog. If your Chihuahua meets one of these categories, you must complete an exemption form.
3. Write a check payable to Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control, or obtain cash for the proper registration fees. As of January 2011, pet licensing fees are between $18 and $72 for a nonspayed or non-neutered Chihuahua, $10 to $36 for a spayed or neutered dog, and $0 to $18 if you are a senior citizen. The fees are dependent on your Chihuahua's home address and are subject to change.

4. To submit your pet license application by mail, print out the Los Angeles County license application form (see Resources) and fill in all required fields. Review the form for accuracy. Include your check for the appropriate fees and mail to the Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control at the address listed on the application.
5. Submit your pet license application in person by first determining which of the six local LA County Department of Animal Care and Control that serves your home location. Bring the required proof of rabies vaccination and spay/neuter information. Bring check or cash for payment.
6. You will receive your pet license tags by mail in one to three weeks regardless of whether you submit your application in person or by mail.
