Nobody knows for sure why cats enjoy eating houseplants. After all, cats are carnivorous creatures and therefore should find leafy greens unappealing. Some experts theorize that the plants may aid in a cat's digestion by providing fiber, while others theorize that eating plants may just provide a feeling of pleasure. Whatever the case, the problem can become quite a nuisance for cat owners.
Instructions
1. Remove any plants that are poisonous to cats. If your cat enjoys eating plants, then you must eliminate any dangerous plants at once. The ASPCA offers a complete list of bad plants on their website. For example, Easter lilies are extremely toxic to cats.
2. Situate your remaining plants in areas where your cat cannot easily access them. For example, you might place a plant on a dresser or bookshelf far away from any windowsills.
3. Train your cat not to eat plants. If you catch him in the act, firmly scold him and remove him from the area. You may also discipline him with a spray bottle filled with water. Only discipline your cat if you catch him right away, never after the fact.
4. Place cat grass in a pot and allow your cat to eat it. This will allow her to fulfill her need to chew on greenery without ruining your plants. You can purchase cat grass at most major pet stores.
5. Spray a citrus-scented solution on your plants, such as an air freshener. The citrus smell will repel your cat.
