Girl Scout Service Projects

Girl Scouts learn work together to be community leaders.

Girl Scouts are youth organizations that teach young ladies the value of becoming community leaders and helpers. Through service projects, Girl Scouts can give back to the community by coming up with creative ways to raise money for charitable causes or performing deeds to help others. Troop leaders and their girls can come up with age appropriate service projects that interest them.

Animal Projects

Girl Scout service projects can be for the benefit of animals. One idea for your troop is to have the girls volunteer at a pet shelter, pet rescue organization or a pet adoption fair for rescued animals. Girls can work with the animals and help the organizations by volunteering their services. Another idea for animal service projects is to have the girls host a fundraiser to collect money for a particular animal-related cause. It could be that the girls decide they want to give money to a wildlife endangered species agency, or to the local pet shelter.

Environmental Projects

Environmental service projects have to do with Girl Scouts participating in activities to help the planet. Planting trees, collecting recyclables and taking care of a community garden are some stimulating ideas for a service project centered around the environment. Use the profits from your troop's cookie sales to purchase garden seeds for planting and to pay for the materials needed to maintain a community garden. Girl Scouts can also participate in Earth Day activities being hosted in the community, as well as volunteer at environmental expos.

Human Projects

A wide array of human projects are available in which the Girl Scouts may participate. Some ideas include organizing a blanket-making project where Girl Scouts make blankets to give to children who are undergoing chemotherapy, hosting a fundraiser to make money for charities such as The March of Dimes and donating their time to read to children in the hospital. Human service projects help Girl Scouts feel good about giving to others, and they learn make a difference in the community.

Holiday Projects

Holiday projects revolve around upcoming holidays. A Thanksgiving holiday service project idea is for your troop to make pumpkin bread loaves to deliver to the local homeless shelter, or a Christmas holiday service project could be to collect toys to give to underprivileged children. Your troop can also create holiday cards for senior citizens who are in a nursing home, or volunteer to help out at a soup kitchen for the holiday.
