The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has a law enforcement division based in New York state. Its officers investigate reports of animal abuse and enforce laws relating to animal cruelty. ASPCA officers have been in the spotlight because of their role on Animal Planet's Animal Precinct show. There are few absolute prerequisites to becoming a humane law enforcement agent with ASPCA, but competition is fierce.
Volunteer Experience
Volunteering with an animal organization such as your local veterinary clinic or shelter can help an application to the ASPCA. Use this experience to learn more about animals and cruelty issues and to demonstrate your commitment to animal well-being.
Education
Work toward a college degree. While having a degree is not absolutely required by the ASPCA, most humane law enforcement agents do have a degree and it will help your application. Take classes in criminology and animal sciences where these are available to you.
Prior Careers
If you have prior training and experience as a police officer, you have a distinct advantage in being selected for a humane law enforcement agent career. Other previous careers or experience that are helpful include being a peace officer or a park ranger.
Residence and Eligibility
You must reside in New York state in order to be considered for employment with the ASPCA's law enforcement division. All humane law enforcement agents also are certified as peace officers by New York state, so you must be eligible for this certification course, which will include firearms training.
